Second Review of the Equitable Briefing Policy
19 March 2026
The Law Council has recently published the final report of the Second Review of the Equitable Briefing Policy.
Informed by feedback from Adoptees, constituent bodies and a sub-committee of the Law Council’s Equal Opportunity Committee, the report made eight recommendations to support reporting processes and seek more detailed data against the Policy’s objectives. Its recommendations will affect reporting requirements for Adoptees as part of the 2025–26 reporting period, by including new and updated questions both for barristers and briefing entities.
The report also recommended that the existing targets of the Policy remain at 30% for the number and value of briefs to women barristers, and next reviewed once both metrics have been consistently met. Updates were also made to the Policy Statement and Reporting Guidelines to ensure they remain current, accurate and fit-for-purpose.
