The Law Council of Australia welcomes the appointment of Mr Grant Donaldson SC as the new Independent National Security Legislation Monitor (INSLM).

The INSLM plays a critical role in reviewing the operation, effectiveness and implications of national security and counter-terrorism laws; and considers whether the laws contain appropriate protections for individual rights, remain proportionate to terrorism or national security threats, and remain necessary.

The Law Council looks forward to working collaboratively with Mr Donaldson, by providing submissions and evidence to INSLM inquiries. Such submissions include the INSLM’s upcoming reviews of the Criminal Code Amendment (High Risk Terrorist Offenders) Act 2016 and the National Security Legislation Amendment (Espionage and Foreign Interference) Act 2018.

Mr Donaldson was first admitted into Law in 1987 (WA), followed by his election to the Bar in 1998 and appointment as Senior Counsel in 2004. He served as the President of the Western Australian Bar Association between 2009 and 2011 and was appointed Solicitor-General for Western Australia between 2012 and 2016.
