LCA Update - 21 October 2022
In this edition, the Law Council provided evidence to a number of Parliamentary inquires this fortnight, including the Joint Seclect Committee on National anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) Legislation. In this edition, Law Council welcomes the introduction of legislation in to the Federal Parliament which will establish the National Anti-Corruption Commission. In this edition, the Law Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr James Popple as its new Chief Executive Officer. Dr Popple will begin his new role on 25 July 2022. The Law Council and its Constituent Bodies have been long time participants in the development of the national electronic conveyancing system. In this edition, the Law Council says COVID-19 should not be used an excuse to curtail Australia’s personal freedoms that are unrelated to the pandemic. Emergency COVID-19 powers have been used to again extend the powers of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) to detain people for up to seven days for compulsory questioning in relation to terrorism, even though the government proposes to repeal them.
