Margery Nicoll AM and Stephen Macliver AM elected Honorary Life Members of the IBA Two Australians have joined the exclusive and esteemed group of individuals who have been elected Honorary Life Members of the International Bar Association (IBA).
“Before today, the IBA had awarded this honour to just 32 individuals, and of those, just two Australians: the Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG and Nicholas Cowdery AO KC,” Law Council of Australia President, Mr Greg McIntyre SC said.
“At today’s Council Meeting in Bucharest, the ranks of Honorary Life Member grew to 35 and two of the newest honourees are from the Australian legal profession, including the Law Council’s own Margery Nicoll AM.
“Margery has been an integral member and leader of the Law Council since 1986 and expertly represented the Australian legal profession on the IBA for over fifteen years. “During that time, Margery was instrumental in the establishment of the Bar Executives Committee and giving bar executives a role and position in the Bar Issues Commission and the Association as a whole.
“Margery was the first Australian and the first female to Chair the IBA’s Bar Issues Commission and was a member of the Management Board of the IBA for six years.”
In recognising Ms Nicoll’s contribution, the IBA highlighted: “During her period as a Management Board member, Margery always played a key role in finding balanced solutions for the issues which were brought to the attention of the Board, and she always contributed to promote unity and cohesion among the different bodies of the Association.
“Margery was the Co-Chair of the Presidential Task Force on Independence of the Legal Profession which delivered its report in Washington 2016. Such independence continues to be one of the priorities of the Association and she was always on the forefront when these values were at jeopardy, particularly in the South Pacific region.”
In addition to Ms Nicoll, Stephen Macliver AM was today welcomed into the ranks of IBA Honorary Members.
“Stephen was recognised for his steadfast commitment and contribution to the IBA for over three decades,” Mr McIntyre said. “Over that time, he has held a remarkably diverse 25 roles, including five years as a member of the IBA Management Board and the Special Projects Fund Committee as well as Secretary-Treasurer of the IBA Human Rights Institute Council.
“On behalf of the Australian legal profession, I congratulate Margery and Stephen on this honour and thank them for their commitment to promoting the administration of justice under the rule of law both at home and abroad.”
