13 June 2025

The Law Council of Australia expresses its sorrow at the passing of Stuart Clark AM, an exceptionally talented advocate who made an outstanding contribution to the law, the legal profession and the community.

Stuart served as President of the Law Council of Australia in 2016, as a Director from 2012, and as an Executive member from 2014.

Stuart was instrumental in the establishment of the legislation for the Legal Profession Uniform Law in NSW and Victoria and led the Law Council’s Legal Aid Matters campaign.

Stuart was extremely passionate about ensuring access to justice for all, improving diversity and equality within the profession, and addressing injustice, including overrepresentation of First Nations people in our justice system.

From 2012-2015, Stuart was Chair of the Large Law Firm Group; and over his career was also a Member of the Board of the NSW Legal Aid Commission, the Australian Legal Sector Alliance, the Australian Law Reform Commission and the Legal Services Council’s National Admissions Commission.

In 2010, Stuart was appointed an Adjunct Professor of Law at Macquarie University. Stuart was part of the first intake of Macquarie University Law School in 1974 and was a founder of the Macquarie University Law Society.

Stuart also gave generously to the community, including serving on the NSW Rural Fire Service from the age of 16 onwards.

In 2015, Stuart was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for ‘significant service to the law, strategic reform, and the Rural Fire Service’.

The Law Council offers it sincerest condolences to Stuart’s family and friends. He leaves a lasting legacy and will be remembered always as a tireless and valued leader of our profession.
