38th LAWASIA Conference 2025 – Hanoi, Vietnam

Law Council President-elect Tania Wolff, Chief Executive Officer James Popple and Head, International Charlotte Stubbs, attended the LAWASIA Annual Conference in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 9–13 October 2025.
President-elect Wolff represented Australia at the LAWASIA Council Meeting which was attended by the predominant or co-predominant professional bodies representing 19 jurisdictions.1 The Council adopted a resolution on the protection of the profession of lawyer, and admitted Papua New Guinea Law Society and Bhutan Bar Association as new predominant member organisations.
During the Conference, President-elect Wolff participated in a panel session on ‘Responding to the challenges faced by the legal profession in 2025’. The session was moderated by Judge Doug Humphreys CSC OAM and included panellists representing the Nepal Bar Association, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations and the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. In the margins of the Conference, the delegation met with the Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Her Excellency Gillian Bird PSM and held bilateral meetings with counterparts including the Malaysian Bar, the Fiji Law Society, the Law Society of England and Wales, the Law Society of Singapore, the Korean Bar Association, the Law Society of Hong Kong, the German Federal Bar, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, and senior office holders from LAWASIA.
The Law Council is delighted that former President Greg McIntyre SC has been re-elected to the LAWASIA Executive Committee for 2026–2027.
LAWASIA was established in 1966 as a regional association of lawyers, judges, jurists and legal organisations, which advocates for the interests and concerns of the Asia Pacific legal profession. Since 1 July 2023, the Law Council has hosted LAWASIA and provides corporate administration support to LAWASIA’s Secretariat.
