On 21 January 2025, President Juliana Warner, Chief Executive Officer James Popple, and members of the Law Council’s International Division met with a delegation from Japan’s Ministry of Justice who were visiting Australia to better understand legal profession regulation in Australia.

The Law Council provided a briefing on Australia’s regulatory frameworks and comparative experience, particularly regarding the regulation of foreign lawyers and incorporated legal practices. The Law Council also shared the experiences of Australian lawyers and firms operating in Japan and provided views on how the system to register as a foreign lawyer in Japan could be further streamlined.

Last year, the Law Council welcomed changes introduced by the Ministry of Justice to permit the re-use of particular documents when a foreign lawyer applies to renew their registration as well as the reduction in overall number of documents required when applying for registration. The Law Council continues to seek further improvements in line with best practice principles which would provide Australian lawyers a similar level of access in Japan to that which is already provided to all foreign lawyers seeking to practise in Australia.
