Law Council President Addresses New Zealand Law Society on Legal Sector Priorities

On 11-12 April 2024, Law Council President, Mr Greg McIntyre SC and Chief Executive Officer, Dr James Popple, attended the New Zealand Law Society Board and Council Meetings held in Wellington. President McIntyre addressed both the Board and Council in their meetings on 11 April and 12 April respectively, reporting on the legal sector issues in Australia including the Law Council’s recent engagement and advocacy on legal assistance funding, its policy on Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) debt reduction and indexation relief for legal practitioners working in regional, rural and remote areas, and the reforms to Australia’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) regime.

President McIntyre and Dr Popple met with New Zealand Law Society’s President Frazer Barton and Chief Executive Officer, Katie Rusbatch to discuss ongoing priorities of both legal professional bodies. President McIntyre also took the opportunity to meet with Ms Arti Chand, President of the Pacific Lawyers Association of New Zealand and South Pacific Lawyers’ Association Executive Member, to discuss the legal sector in the Pacific region and opportunities for collaboration.
