Last week, Law Council President-elect, Tania Wolff, participated in a panel discussion at Parliament House to raise awareness of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) Awareness Month.

Hosted by the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education, Tania was joined in conversation by Chair of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation Donnella Mills, Professor Elizabeth Elliot AM and Jennifer Rogers of Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Services.

The panel discussion focused on the relationship between FASD and children in the criminal justice system.

The Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Mark Butler MP delivered the opening address. The Minister spoke to the need for Government to work in partnership with Aboriginal community-controlled services to deliver on health and justice outcomes.

President-elect Wolff spoke to the need for a coordinated response across the health, justice and education sectors. Wolff echoed calls from the panel for the Australian Government to commit to long-term funding for holistic support services and highlighted its importance, particularly in rural and remote areas.
