Last week, policy lawyers and communications specialists from the Law Council’s Constituent Bodies gathered in Canberra for the National Policy Lawyers’ Forum. The forum was an outstanding event, providing an invaluable opportunity to share knowledge, ideas and strategy, as well as hear from a diverse range of speakers across a range of topics, ranging from policy and the media to access to justice issues.
Day one included sessions dealing with influencing policy, Constituent Body collaboration, and achieving results through election, budget and broader campaign calls. Day two saw the discussion of topics including family law reforms, the Voice and the Referendum, protecting common law privileges, and the role of the law and the legal profession responding to climate change.
The list of outstanding speakers included Senator David Pocock (Senator for the ACT), Senator Tammy Tyrrell (Senator for TAS), Ms Julie Abramson (Commissioner, Productivity Commission), Prof Megan Davis (Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous, UNSW), Dr Tony McAvoy SC (Chair, LCA Indigenous Legal Issues Committee), Dr John Boersig PSM (Chief Executive Officer, Legal Aid ACT), Mr Ben Gauntlett (Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Australian Human Rights Commission), Mr Paul Osbourne (Canberra Bureau Chief, Australian Associated Press), and Ms Elizabeth Byrne (High Court reporter, ABC).
The Law Council would like to thank all the speakers and delegates who attended the National Policy Lawyers’ Forum.
