Policy and Public Affairs Forum

14 March 2019

Earlier this month, policy lawyers and communications specialists from the Law Council’s Constituent Bodies across the country converged on Brisbane for the National Policy Lawyers and Public Relations Forum 2019.

The Forum, hosted by the Queensland Law Society, was an outstanding event, providing an invaluable opportunity to share knowledge, ideas and strategy, as well as hear from a diverse range of speakers across a range of topics, ranging from election platforms to elder abuse.

The first day included sessions dealing with influencing policy, the creation of a federal integrity commission, and the Law Council’s Justice Project.

Day two saw the discussion of topics including legal assistance sector funding, drafting submissions, First Nations legal issues and the rise of the surveillance state.

The list of outstanding speakers included Donna O'Donoghue, Director of Policy, Office of the Premier (Qld), Nathan Ruhle, Director of Policy, Office of the Leader of the Opposition (Qld), Terry O’Gorman, Vice-President, Queensland Council for Civil Liberties and President, Australian Council for Civil Liberties, Mary Burgess, Public Advocate for Queensland, and Debbie Kilroy OAM, CEO, Sisters Inside.
