Review of National Arrangements for the Protection and Management of Identity Information

On Monday 22 October 2018, Law Council representatives attended a Roundtable in Melbourne regarding the Review of National Arrangements for the Protection and Management of Identity Information - Privacy, consumer and public advocacy.
Announced by the Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon Peter Dutton MP, the Review will consider ways to enhance or strengthen arrangements for the protection, use and management of identity information in Australia and the public have been invited to provide submissions.
The Review is being led by Roger Wilkins, AO (a former Secretary of the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department) and Professor David Lacey (Managing Director of IDCARE, the not-for-profit support service for victims of identity crime).
Law Council representatives at the Roundtable discussed for example the need for: a clearer definition of the problem statement; articulation of the difference between identity and entitlement to transact, receive service of benefit; and issues about reliance on biometric data and in particular the privacy risks.
