On 4 February 2022, the South Pacific Lawyers’ Association (SPLA) held its 2021 Annual General Meeting via Zoom. The meeting was attended by representatives from Samoa, Fiji, Tuvalu, Timor Leste, New Zealand and Norfolk Island, as well as an observer from Palau. SPLA appointed its Executive for 2022-23:

The Chair of SPLA, Gordon Hughes, was reappointed for a further term.

Each of the attendees provided a summary of issues of concern in their jurisdiction over the past year, as well as forthcoming or emerging issues. The Law Council, in its capacity of SPLA Secretariat, provided a report on the Secretariat’s activities in 2021. Attendees also resolved to offer support to Tonga’s legal profession through the Tonga Law Society, following the tsunami of 15 January 2022, with SPLA acting as a coordinating body with other national and international legal organisations who are also eager to offer support.
