On 29 October 2025, a General Meeting of the South Pacific Lawyers’ Association (SPLA) was held in the margins of the Fiji Law Society and Pasifika Lawyers Collective Convention 2025 in Nadi, Fiji.
Former Law Council of Australia President Dr Gordon Hughes AM attended the meeting in his capacity as Chair of SPLA, and was joined by Rachel MacLennan, Policy Lawyer (International).
The SPLA meeting was attended by representatives from the Fiji Law Society, the Law Council of Australia, Cook Islands Law Society, Samoa Law Society, New Zealand Law Society, Norfolk Island Lawyers Association, Papua New Guinea Law Society and the American Samoa Bar Association. The meeting provided an opportunity for the representatives to share challenges facing their legal professions, and to identify opportunities for regional cooperation on rule of law issues.

SPLA was established in 2011 to promote the rule of law and strengthen the role of professional legal associations in the South Pacific. Its Constituent Members are 16 law societies, bar associations and lawyers’ groups in the South Pacific. The Law Council has served as Secretariat of SPLA since its inception.
