11 July 2025
On 25 June 2025, Law Council President Juliana Warner presented a statement before the Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers. The statement, which was co-sponsored by the International Bar Association Human Rights Institute and LAWASIA, expressed concern regarding actions which seek to influence, undermine or hinder the activities of courts and personally target judges or lawyers for exercising their professional duties or exercising their civil and political rights. The statement urged the Special Rapporteur to affirm and elaborate on the right of lawyers to freedom of expression, and to investigate and address the misuse of sanctions against lawyers, courts and related entities.
The Law Council also sponsored statements delivered by LAWASIA regarding threats to judicial independence in the Maldives, and the International Bar Association Human Rights Institute on human rights violations in Myanmar.
