Death Penalty
Law Council Policy
The Law Council of Australia has had a longstanding policy opposing the imposition or execution of the death penalty.
The Law Council’s first policy statement on the death penalty was adopted in 2007. In line with this policy, the Law Council has advocated strongly to ensure that Australia proactively maintains its commitment to the abolition of the death penalty not only in Australia, but across the world.
In 2021, the Law Council revised its policy statement in light of significant legal, policy and political developments. The new policy statement explains in detail:
- the nature of the Law Council's opposition to the death penalty;
- the basis for the Law Council's opposition to the death penalty; and
- the policy and advocacy implications of the Law Council's opposition to the death penalty.
