Inquiry into Australian university graduates

The Law Council of Australia provided a submission to the Senate Education and Employment References Committee in response to the Inquiry into Australian university graduates.
This submission is informed by contributions from the Queensland Law Society, the Law Society of South Australia, the Victorian Bar, the Law Institute of Victoria and the Law Council’s Legal Education Working Group.
Legal education operates within a complex, highly regulated ecosystem that encompasses undergraduate university study, pre-admission practical legal training, and supervised professional practice. Concerns about graduate employment outcomes, graduate readiness and the student experience post-graduation, must therefore be understood across this broader continuum, rather than being attributed to universities alone or assessed solely through the lens of immediate employment outcomes. Universities do, however, play a critical role in the first phase of professional development.
