Law Council of Australia

Inquiry into the Australian Government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic

The Law Council notes that the Australian Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic was made in unprecedented circumstances and in the context of a global crisis which saw profound changes on an almost daily basis. It should be acknowledged that overall, Australia has managed the pandemic situation well, given the relatively low rates of infection and death at the time of writing.

The Terms of Reference for the present inquiry are exceptionally broad, and could potentially include a very wide range of legal and policy matters of interest to the Law Council and its Constituent Bodies. In light of this broad scope and the two-year timeframe in which to report, the Law Council is of the view that the Committee should, as a next step, engage in a more targeted process by calling for specific responses to key and emerging themes, including those set out within this submission.
