Religious Freedom Bills
The Law Council recognises there are opportunities to consolidate and strengthen protections to prevent discrimination against people on the ground of their religion at the federal level, given existing protections are fragmented and inconsistent.
The Law Council considers that rights and freedoms should be protected in a coherent legal framework that promotes the understanding that human rights are universal, indivisible, interdependent and interrelated.
As such, the Law Council continues to support a federal human rights act. It also supports the adoption of comprehensive, consolidated federal anti-discrimination legislation, provided this preserves and strengthens existing protections.
However, the Law Council recognises that the Australian Government has adopted a different approach at this time.
