Response to Issues paper - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual arts and crafts

The submission to the Productivity Commission in response to the Issues Paper in relation to its study of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual arts and crafts (the Issues Paper) was prepared by the Intellectual Property Committee (the IPC) of the Business Law Section of the Law Council of Australia.

As an overarching comment, the IPC wishes to acknowledge that the authors of this submission are not First Nations, or Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists or people and the views and opinions expressed in this submission should be considered on that basis.

While the IPC can assist the Productivity Commission as practitioners and researchers, any decision-making about reform or maintaining the status quo should only be undertaken taking into account the principles of free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) of the relevant First Nations peoples and their communities.
