Supplementary submission: Inquiry into the Destruction of 46,000 Year Old Caves at the Juukan Gorge in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia

On 2 October 2020, the Law Council of Australia appeared via teleconference before the Joint Standing Committee on Northern Australia as part of a public hearing for the inquiry into the destruction of 46,000 year old caves at the Juukan Gorge in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

In the course of its appearance, the Law Council was asked whether it might have further information it wished to provide to assist the Committee in its deliberations, including on examples of best practice and on how cultural heritage legislation might be better aligned with the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth).

This supplementary submission addresses that request for further information. It also responds to Senator Dodson’s additional Questions on Notice which were relayed to the Law Council on 12 October 2020.

You can read the full submission below.
