Law Council President attends Ministerial Roundtable on Embedding Human Rights via the Disability Royal Commission Recommendations

8 May 2024

On 26 April 2024, Law Council President, Greg McIntyre SC, attended a roundtable hosted by the Minister for Social Services, the Hon Amanda Rishworth MP and the Attorney-General, the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP, on the role of human rights in the Government’s response to the Final Report of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability.

The President emphasised that the Law Council is in favour of a comprehensive federal Human Rights Act (in line with the Federal Human Rights Charter Policy) as the best way to protect the rights of all Australians, including Australians living with disability. The Law Council would also like to see cohesive, consistent anti-discrimination law reform (as recommended by the Australian Human Rights Commission), rather than piecemeal reforms to individual Acts. Finally, the President highlighted the Law Council’s particular interest in the Recommendations of the Royal Commission relating to the treatment of persons with disabilities in the justice system, including in closed environments.

The Law Council greatly appreciated the opportunity to participate in this high-level event dedicated to better implementation of Australia’s international human rights obligations.
