Rural, Regional and Remote Committee
The Law Council’s Rural, Regional and Remote Committee (Committee) was re-established in 2020. The Committee advises the Law Council in the development of its strategies and policies addressing the challenges faced by RRR lawyers and the communities they service, including, but not limited to:
- recruiting and retaining lawyers;
- general shortages of lawyers in RRR areas;
- conflict of interest problems due to scarcity of locally available lawyers; and
- scarce and over-stretched legal assistance services.
In 2020, the Committee worked with the Law Council’s Constituent Bodies to develop the RRR National Strategic Plan. As part of the National Strategic Plan, the Committee also assisted the Law Council in the development of a refreshed RRR Law webpage, launched in March 2021 as a centralised information source and platform for the Law Council’s RRR policies and projects.
The Committee will continue to assist and advise the Law Council with the development of the projects canvassed in the National Strategic Plan, in consultation with the Law Council’s Constituent Bodies, Sections and key stakeholders.
