Bannerman Competition Lecture 2022

16 February 2022

On 10 February 2022, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) in conjunction with the Business Law Section (BLS) hosted the annual Bannerman Competition Lecture in honour of the contribution to competition law and regulation by the late Ron Bannerman AO. The lecture this year was delivered by Ms Lina Khan, Chair of the Federal Trade Commission.

Ms Khan’s speech outlined the challenges of competition regulation amid a surge of mergers in the US, and detailed the inquiry underway by the FTC and the US Justice Department’s Antitrust Division to examine how US merger guidelines can be modernised to better detect and prevent illegal, anticompetitive deals. The speech was followed by a lengthy and engaging Q&A session with Ms Khan and ACCC Chair Mr Rod Sims.

The annual Bannerman Competition Lecture has become one of the most important events on the competition law calendar in Australia. Due to the ongoing pandemic, this year’s lecture was once again held virtually, allowing the event to reach a wide audience both domestic and internationally with over 700 registered delegates. A recording of this year’s event is available below.

The BLS gives its thanks to Ms Khan and the ACCC for another successful event.
