Interest Groups

The Business Law Section (BLS) Interest Groups offer members a flexible and collaborative space to explore specialist areas of business law. Unlike our standing committees, which focus on formal policy development, submissions and ongoing governance work, the Interest Groups operate as open and member driven forums. They are open to all members of the BLS and provide opportunities to share ideas, track emerging developments and deepen engagement without the commitments that come with committee service.

How Interest Groups work

Interest Groups function as vibrant communities rather than structured committees. They provide a space where members can:

Through the BLS member portal, participants can signal their areas of interest, build networks across the profession and join conversations as they evolve.

Opportunities for engagement

Each Interest Group curates activities that enrich members’ understanding and professional growth. These may include:

Our aim is to create accessible and high value touchpoints that help members stay informed, expand their networks and contribute meaningfully to their chosen areas of practice.

Why join an Interest Group

Interest Groups are ideal for members who want to stay connected to developments in business law, explore niche topics or engage with the Section in a more flexible way. Whether you are early in your career or a seasoned specialist, these groups offer a welcoming space to learn, share and connect.

The AI and Business Law Interest Group will provide a forum within the BLS for members to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on business law practice in Australia. Its purpose is to enable members to share expertise, monitor developments, and collaborate on initiatives that support the profession in adapting to technological change.

Through knowledge‑sharing activities, the Interest Group will equip members with insights into AI’s implications for business law and position the BLS to respond to emerging issues, benefiting both the profession and the wider Australian community.

The Business and Sustainability Interest Group brings together members of the BLS who share an interest in the intersection of business, regulation, and sustainability. Our focus spans a wide range of pressing issues, including:

  • Climate change and the energy transition
  • Nature, biodiversity, and the environment
  • People and societies – covering human rights, modern slavery, First Nations engagement, anti‑bribery and corruption, and ESG reporting and transparency
  • Animal welfare

The Interest Group provides a platform for the BLS to engage with the Law Council on sustainability‑related issues and to shape the profession’s response to new challenges.

The Regulatory Reform Interest Group brings together members of the BLS who share an interest in broader questions of regulatory design and reform.

Rather than concentrating on a particular area of business law, our focus is on:

  • Principles of regulatory design and stewardship that can shape effective business regulation in the public interest
  • Processes by which business regulation is made and administered in Australia, and how those processes can be improved.

The Interest Group provides a platform for the BLS to engage with the Law Council on issues of regulatory design and to shape the legal profession’s response to the global conversation about effective regulation.
