On 25 February 2020, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) in conjunction with the Business Law Section (BLS) hosted the annual Bannerman Competition Lecture in honour of the contribution to competition law and regulation by the late Ron Bannerman AO.

The lecture this year was given by Ms Isabelle de Silva, President of the French Competition Authority and covered the topics:
- The debate on the effectiveness of competition policy in the face of multiple challenges, in connection with the digitisation of the economy and international trade issues, emphasising the need to better underline the benefits of competition rules for consumers, their relevance in the digital economy, and how they do not impede the growth of so-called national/Europeans "champions";
- The debate on the objectives to be pursued by competition law, and whether there should be a broader view taken as to the objectives; and
- The debate on the necessity of shaking up the regulation framework - do the current challenges call for a revised policy mix and the new ex ante evaluation of regulation?
The annual Bannerman Competition Lecture has become one of the most important events on the competition law calendar in Australia. This year the event was held at Allens in Melbourne and was attended by over 100 guests including international guests from Canada, Cambodia, Chile, the Philippines and New Zealand.
Thank you to Ms de Silva and the ACCC on a very successful event.
